Let’s Talk About Classroom Decor

May 25, 2012

Okay, teacher friends, I need your input! My principal approached me on the way to lunch today to let me know that my classroom will be our new kindergarten room next year (eek!) and that I will need to move. It was a total surprise. I knew we needed an extra kindergarten room next year and the speculations were flying about where it would go, but my room never entered the discussions. I sincerely don’t mind moving and am so thankful to be staying in third grade, but it’s a total bummer to find out in the last few hours of school. I already had my August calendar up, that’s just the kind of planner I am. So… I guess you know what I’ll be doing for several days in the next few weeks. That’s where you come in. I’m so torn about my bulletin boards!

The other classroom has the exact same layout as mine, so I planned to move everything over and put it exactly where it is in my current room. I just redid everything last Christmas and am really happy with the layout, board information, etc. but the bulletin boards desperately need repainted in the new classroom. That’s where my indecision comes into play. I have my current bulletin boards in different colors with different borders. I love how put together School Girl Style’s layouts look though and was thinking about picking one paint color and using the same border everywhere. Part of me is afraid that won’t feel as fun, interesting, or inviting though.

Here are pictures of our current room. I know I want the ones on each side of the chalkboard to match next year since they mirror each other, but should they all match? Should I stick with purple, blue, and green? What do you do in your rooms? Do all of your boards match? What do you think are the pros/cons?

Let’s chat, either here in the comments or over on my Facebook page. Bonus points for pictures of your rooms!

I am using School Girl Style's green bird theme in my room next year. I have already started putting up paper and border and it is really looking nice. One wall of bulletin boards is brown paper with green polka dot border layered with solid green border and the other wall has a light lime green paper with the polka dot border and brown border layered! I love the look! It is calming, warm and beautiful. I don't have pictures yet b/c it is still a work in progress. Good luck!

I think change is always fun and refreshing although a lot of work! I think you should change it up. I am also changing rooms this year and I am definitely going with the same theme all over the room. I am really excited to see how it looks!!

I will say that if you do decide to go with Schoolgirl theme things, I am sure if you have any students with ADHD it will not be so overwhelming. I am also thinking I am going to do the same thing….same borders, bulletin board paper etc. Not too much stimulation is good for the kids! Just my thoughts but I have been wanting to do this for a few years so I think I am going to give it a try. Good luck and I can't wait to see pictures!

I stick with the same color on all my bulletin boards and change up the borders when possible. I agree with Kelly that it is nice to have a calming palette for your kids who can't seem to focus. The pics you have look great. Your classroom is huge, I'm jealous!! Good luck in your move:))

In the past, I changed up the borders in my room. But three years ago I moved up to third and decided to decorate with one theme. I love it! There is definitely a more calming effect in a room with a theme.

I switched to cohesive colors and borders. It makes your room look so much cleaner and even bigger too! I say stick with one color.

Okay, I think I'm going for it. My dear husband brought home paint testers. We're getting a makeover, ya'll!
