Love is in the air! Ideas & Freebies

February 5, 2013

I just love February. I love the sweet little notes from my students, the candy (oh, the candy!), and the extra celebration with my husband because it’s the month we first met. It’s also the month BEFORE all the crazy state testing amps up big time at our school. Looking at our calendar for March and April sort of reads like: tests, tests, tests, and more tests. Let’s not think about that yet, okay?

We’re been working so hard on our word work skills. Some of my students still aren’t writing complete sentences. They’re also having a hard time in writing workshop when I say things like, “Let’s spice up your writing with some fancy adjectives!” because they don’t understand all of the parts of speech and how they work together. I knew we needed  a new center so I managed to whip one up with a Valentine’s theme.

I like it because it has nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in context. Students can sort the parts of speech. As a bonus, they’re also working on alphabetical order. I try to toss in dictionary skills whenever possible because so many of my third graders still rely on the alphabet line in our classroom and have trouble with before/after when it comes to looking up the letters. If you think this center is something you can use too you can grab it in my TpT store.

Now for the Valentine freebie as part of our blog hop! {Check out the links below if you missed the other great freebies!}

I‘ve been making coloring sheets in a variety of themes for my math group this year because they love to color and can really use the extra fact practice. We have math groups right before our Valentine party and I usually do candy heart graphing, but I decided to mix things up this year with 6, 7, 8, and 9 fact practice. We’re working on number families and the relationship between multiplication and division. You can grab your freebie in my TpT store. If you like it, please take a second to leave feedback. Thanks!

You can also follow my new Valentine’s board on Pinterest if you aren’t already to keep up with all the other great finds I’m scouting over there. =)

Don’t forget to keep hopping along to pick up your Valentine freebies. Tomorrow’s blog:

      I tend to always go language arts for morning work, but my kiddos would love this too. Great idea!

    Thanks so much for the "Valen-Times" freebie- my kids will be doing it tomorrow! 🙂

Some of my favorite childhood memories are making cupcakes with my mom. When I saw the I’m The Chef Too subscription box, it was an easy YES. Almost everything you need is right inside the box each month to make it easy. There are typically about 3 servings, so you make enough for everyone to have one treat without leftovers hanging around.
