Okay, y’all. Raise your hand if you remember reading Highlights magazine as a child.
Yup. Me too. I absolutely loved getting MY magazine with MY name on it in MY mailbox. I felt so big. I would excitedly read the whole thing right away, oftentimes to my stuffed animals a they sat lined up across my bed {cleary I was meant to be a teacher}. Then I’d force politely ask my mom to solve the Hidden Pictures with me. I refused to let anyone write in MY magazine so that I could use it over and over. I was also a big fan of the Timbertoes and jokes.
So I was obviously excited with Highlights contacted me to see if I’d review their new classroom subscriptions and teacher guides. Yes, you heard me. Teacher guides, friends! Obviously I said yes. I’m happy to report that the magazine still has all the old favorites I remembered, plus many more.
I love that the magazine has several pages with authentic writing written for students, by students. I can totally see my third graders wanting to pick up these books after reading the reviews written by other kids AND wanting to write their own reviews too.
This part was always one of my favorites so I’m glad to see it’s still here too. 🙂
But here’s where they’ve stepped it up a notch… look at all this stuff you get with a subscription. Not only do you get a classroom set of 9 monthly magazines, but you also get an 8 page teacher’s guide, online access, and a tote bag. And you KNOW how teacher’s hoard collect tote bags.
Now my question was what exactly was in this teacher’s guide because I see a lot of “teacher stuff” that is more like “teacher fluff” in educational publishing. I’m happy to report that this one is well laid out and classroom appropriate.
For the main articles, you have a whole group lesson, small group lesson, and independent learning options. There are a few response sheets you could use too.
I also liked that there’s a parent section with tips to help parents interact with the magazine at home. Overall, I’d say this is a sold, well-rounded classroom subscription. It has fiction/nonfiction articles, puzzles/games, critical thinking activities, and cross curricular content too. Students would love doing this easy experiment!
You can download preview materials and get the full scoop on the Highlights website. It’s just under $10 per student, which is a great value at 75% off the cover price for individual subscriptions. Love that!

I used to LOVE Highlights! Glad to see it's still around!
