I’ve been kind of obsessed with these pencil shaving art pieces. So much art has been taken out of education, but how much fun would kids have with these? I could easily see the art as a beginning point for creative writing. That’s what we call a twofer. 😉

What are some ways you incorporate art into your curriculum?

Since I teach a Young 5's class, I'm able to incorporate art into much of what I do. I try to make learning sight words interesting so the kids watercolor wash over the sight word written w/ white crayons on a weekly basis. They love seeing the word appear magically! We also make color collages as we're learning to read & spell color words. With almost any literature we read as a class, there's an art activity to be done. I especially like to incorporate art when we focus on fairy tales. The illustrations even a young child can do is amazing!
Learning at the Teacher Table
Thankfully, my district still has elementary art class once a week for grades K-5. I also love to incorporate art into lessons. On Friday afternoons, I typically do some sort of art project that relates to what we've been learning about, or goes along with a theme for that time of year. I typically give the students an example, but I let them add their own flair to it. It's so fascinating to see what they come up with when I give them "the big idea" and then let them create the end product using the materials I give them and their imagination. 🙂

Mrs. Campbell's Kids
I love the pencil shavings art project! We are fortunate enough to have a great art teacher. However, I still try to integrate it as much as possible. My students create personal seals, models of the state flag and try to replicate artifacts for just a few examples.

Fit to be Fourth
This will be our first year without an art teacher. I plan to "beef up" my art center (I teach K) by including more materials left behind by our retired art teacher. I am also going to do more directed drawing at the beginning of the year during our writing block.

A Very Curious Class
I teach students with autism. I am certified in sp ed and art. Every lesson that I teach has an art component to it
